As countless organizations transition to temporary and permanent work from home models, companies must reevaluate all aspects of their business structure. Leaders from all industries are adjusting company goals, adjusting standard operating procedures and changes in workflow and determining how to keep company culture alive remotely. One aspect of managing a team that is crucial in a remote environment, is how to motivate your team. There is no “one size fits all” way to motivate employees as everyone operates differently. However, motivation techniques are critical to improving performance.
1. Set clear expectations
As a leader, employees must know their goals and KPIs. This allows individuals to work towards a set goal, allowing them to feel accomplished upon reaching their target. Having daily, weekly, and even monthly objectives gives employees a purpose.
2. Reward employees who reach goals
Whether it be a congratulatory phone call, a shout-out in the next departmental meeting, or even points given through an internal employee recognition system, employees need to be recognized for reaching a goal. This attaches an emotion with reaching a goal.
3. Communicate, communicate, communicate!
Since you are not physically seeing your team every day, strong communication must be at the foundation of these relationships. Communicating your expectations will encourage employees to come to you when there is an issue. Communicating company metrics will allow employees to remain connected to the organization.
4. Trust your team
Personally, and professionally. You hired them for a reason, give them the chance to succeed on their own.
5. Get to know employees on a more personal level
Working from home is a lonely environment where constant human interaction is missing. If you only talk to your employees when there is an issue, this makes the employee feel unvalued and decreases morale. Taking a few minutes out of your day to connect with your employees shows that you care about them, and not just the bottom line.
Working remotely presents a series of unique challenges that everyone in an organization must overcome together. With strong a leadership team, you have the ability to outperform your competitors. Aegis HCCP is here to help you reach those goals.
